Wi-Fi range varies by router and environment. Choose a reliable brand, preferably an 802.11n router operating at 5 or 6 GHz, although 802.11g is acceptable.
Obstacles like walls can weaken the Wi-Fi signal, and crowded rooms with many devices can also impact performance.
For coverage estimates, see this table: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11#Protocols).
Wi-Fi repeaters can enhance range for large areas, and some routers support multiple units (mesh network) to boost coverage.
